What the IRS says
- Prescribed medicines are medical expenses that can be paid or reimbursed by an HSA, FSA, Archer MSA or HRA.
- A weight-loss program counts only if it treats a specific disease diagnosed by a physician (such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension or heart disease).
- You can't also deduct an amount on your tax return if it was paid from an HSA/FSA.
Practical tips
- LillyDirect lists Zepbound as HSA/FSA eligible, noting eligibility may vary by plan.
- FSAFEDS (federal FSA) says to keep itemized receipts; credit-card receipts alone aren't acceptable documentation, and some weight-loss expenses need a doctor's letter of medical necessity.
- Check your own plan administrator's rules before paying.
